Mira-sol organic community garden

The Mirasol Organic Community Garden is supported by the Neighborhood Council of Mirasol and other neighborhood associations. It aims to foster community and incorporate sustainability criteria in a low-density residential area.

It proposes a strategy to create a central multi-use space: an educational space for skill-sharing, a space for environmental management, an economically beneficial and productive space, an intergenerational socializing space, and a recreational space to support the health and safety of marginalized or vulnerable peoples. Its proximity to Casal Mirasol will create a cultural and educational environment, encouraging coexistence and promoting values for a healthy and full life for the whole neighborhood.

Proposal objectives:

Economic Function: Provides a space for agro-ecological food production for all groups of people, especially for youth, elderly, and people with disabilities.  The garden offers the possibility of producing fresh, high quality, organic food and encourages the discovery and rediscovery of self-sufficiency in people from all walks of life.

Social Function: Generates shared spaces that encourage intergenerational activities and interactions. Because it is identified as a communal working environment and a self-managed space, the garden serves as an informal gathering space where new connections can be made, strengthening the social fabric of the community

Educational Function: Trains people in horticultural techniques and procedures according to the principles of organic farming. The garden is also a formal and informal educational space that emphasizes ecological values, the importance of a nutritional diet and healthy living, and raises awareness for urban sustainability

The garden has 40 personal garden plots to cultivate individually or in groups, a communal garden area where classes and activities are held, a greenhouse, a picnic area, a changing room, a composting area, and various storage spaces. After the completion of construction, the architects continued to support the community in the transference of responsibility over the garden. The garden is self-managed by the community of gardeners who, after a one-year follow-up process with the team of architects , became an association responsible for the management of every aspect of the garden. The gardens are situated in a plot ceded by the City Council and they are a pilot project to develop other community managed gardens in the city.
